Match Preview: Apple Cup

Your UW Men's Rugby team's first game of the season is the 2024 Apple Cup this weekend in Pullman! With only 2 weeks to prepare, we've prioritized fitness, contact zone, and installed as much set piece and attack/defense shape as possible. In this rivalry, we anticipate a hard-hitting Coug team who are 6 weeks and a couple games into their season.

This year we have some strong Dawgs returning who are up for the challenge and many new players pushing hard and competing for playing time. Exciting new recruits earning spots in the starting lineup include Xavier Moimoi and Thomas Williams, with Jsame Fola and Michael Bruin on the bench.

Our 1st XV forward pack is leading the way with a good deal of experience while the 2nd XV pack is composed of almost entirely new players who are only a couple weeks into their rugby careers. That being said, there are a lot of promising players in this 2nd XV pack who, if they stick to it, could make their way into the 1st side by the end of the season, or sooner. Our backs have some powerful runners with the 1st and 2nd XV backlines being much closer in ability than the forwards. While we remain a forward-dominant team at the moment, the club will benefit from the fierce competition for the starting backline spots as the season progresses.
